Our steam secretary has been in touch to confirm the following steam engines have entered for the Crank Up.

GEORGE is an Aveling and Porter steam roller that worked for Essex County Council, possibly based at Newport, very near to the Crank Up Site. Steam rollers are the most easily recognised form of steam engine for many people, and also worked commercially the latest, in some cases up into the seventies.  George is now owned by Mr. D. Chidgey.

This is a Wallis and Steevens steam tractor. These were used for light haulage and timber work. This one belongs to Mr. P. Whipps.

LADY HELEN is an Aveling Barford steam roller, owned by Mr. W. Childs.

ADVENTURER is a Garrett steam tractor, which was new to the Ministry of Munitions during the First World War. It is owned by Mr. M. Dyson.

Robert Pumfrey is organising the 32nd Annual Whittlesford film and video show, to be held on Saturday, 21st February 2015 at Whittlesford Memorial Hall, Whittlesford near Cambridge. CB22 4NE.

Steam films dating from the 1960s to the present day, many unseen elsewhere, will be shown. There will also be refreshments available, and a raffle.

All are welcome at this free event, which starts at 7.00 pm.

The organisers of the Saffron Walden Crank Up are pleased to announce the first steam engine to be entered for the event is the Ruston Proctor Traction Engine “Success”, owned by the Pumfrey family from Little Chesterford.  This engine has been owned by the family since new, and worked commercially all around the local area.  She was also a regular at the Shire Hill Crank Up for many years.

The organisers of the Saffron Walden Crank Up would be delighted to hear from anybody that would like to help in making this year’s new event a success.

This year the Saffron Walden Crank Up will be an NTET Authorised Event.  The National Traction Engine Trust is the national body looking after the steam preservation movement.  Organisers of traction engine rallies and similar events can, if they wish, apply for authorisation. By doing so they agree to comply with a Code of Practice produced by the NTET which is practical and a sensible way of maintaining administrative and organisational standards, thus ensuring that participants and visitors to events have a safe and enjoyable time.

If the sound of a row of stationary engines is music to your ears, you will enjoy the Crank Up!  Our regular engine exhibitors are coming along to put on their display on 9th & 10th May.  Although often overlooked, these small engines were once the backbone of agriculture and industry, being used for many tasks in farms, factories and other places before the electric motor took over.
