THANK YOU!

The organisers and committee of the Saffron Walden Crank Up would like to thank everybody that took part in this year’s event, and helped to make it the resounding success that it undoubtedly was.

Our hosts, the helpers and stewards, traders, contractors, exhibitors, sponsors, visitors and anybody that had a part, however small, in supporting what turned out to be a wonderful weekend.  Our sincere thanks and appreciation to you all.

There will be further reports on this year’s event appearing here in due course, and of course keep checking back for details of future Crank Ups!

Show starts tomorrow!

Exhibits are quickly filling the site.  Tractors, stationary engines, vehicles and steam engines.  The craft and beer tents are up and the caterers are on site!  We look forward to seeing you tomorrow, gates open at 10 am 🙂

Steam on the Road (and at the pub!)

Here is a video by our Committee member Robert Pumfrey BEM, of his engine, Ruston Proctor “Success” and Dan Chidgey’s Aveling & Porter roller “George” at the Fighting Cocks for lunch on Bank Holiday Sunday.  We then see the Ruston heading to the Crank Up site, driven by Michael Pumfrey and steered by event organiser John Hunt…

Bank Holiday Fun

With the Crank Up only a week away now, preparations are well under way!  Today, a number of committee members were at work patching and improving roadways around the site.  Then, in the early afternoon the first two steam exhibits arrived on site, being the Pumfrey family’s Ruston “Success”, and Dan Chidgey’s Aveling roller “George”, both of which had stopped for lunch at the Fighting Cocks, a nearby pub which is very supportive of our event.

George was soon put to work rolling the roadways around the site.  Then two more rollers came along, Aveling “William”, owned by Nick Allen, and the Reid family with their newly acquired Clayton roller.

Another Anniversary Exhibit

Foden “D” Type tractor “Perseverance” is joining us at the Crank Up, this engine also attended the East Anglian Club’s first rally at Saling in 1955, and the anniversary event held there in 1980.   She was formerly owned by Edgar Shone of Cricklewood and is now owned by Peter Richardson, was driven by the late Roy Swain for many years and is a regular at events in East Anglia and beyond.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Foden Tractor

Fairground Attractions

We’re pleased to be able to offer some traditional children’s amusements at the Crank Up this year.  Local showman Joseph Rule will be presenting his Toytown ride, which dates back to 1910 and features a fantastic selection of restored cars, steam roller, horses and other period toys, and a set of children’s “High Flying Swingboats”
