Following the success of the 2025 Saffron Walden Crank Up, the team who run the event on
behalf of the East Anglian Traction Engine Society were delighted to be able to make monetary
donations to five local charities and organisations. The charities chosen were ones with allied
aims in preserving local heritage, and/or provide a service to the local community.
The Saffron Walden Crank Up is a steam and vintage vehicle show which takes place annually at
Carver Barracks, on the former RAF Debden airfield. Every year the show features a wide range
of vintage vehicles and attractions and aims to provide a great value day out for all the family.
This year’s donation recipients are as follows:
Dig It Community Allotment providing engagement and training for people of all ages and
abilities, including senior citizens and those with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Welcome: Innovating for a Sustainable Future – Dig-It
The Flitch Way – a nature conservation project based on the disused railway running from
Braintree to Bishops Stortford, an important green way and wildlife corridor which also includes
a museum dedicated to its railway heritage.
Friends of the Flitch Way – Friends of the Flitch Way
Saffron Walden Museum – an award-winning museum dedicated to local heritage
John Webb’s Windmill – a tower mill in Thaxted, owned by the parish, that is currently undergoing
a major rebuild.
Buffy Playbus – Providing pre-school children in the Saffron Walden area an opportunity to play,
socialise and have fun in comfortable and safe surroundings under the guidance of experienced
qualified playleaders.
The Crank Up organisers are glad to be able to help support the local community in this way. This
year’s event is taking place on 25th & 26th April. Adult admission is £10 each, with children under
16 free.
